The Week of Sickness

Have you ever experienced a week where you feel like you have been to the doctor EVERY day?
A week where you truly realize how important it is to be well?

This is our week.

Last Wednesday, Matthew began running a fever. Being the great mom I am, I thought he was hot all day because it was hot outside.  To prove to myself it was just the weather, I (smart one that I am) waited until 5 PM to take Matthew's temperature. 102* F. What!?!? Took it again, same thing. Knowing that when you are released from the hospital after having a baby and every newborn class I have taken, temperature is really bad for an 8 week old. Flipping out a little, I call the pediatrician, who (of course) is out for the evening, but I do get the AR Children's Hospital Answering Service. The sweet nurse told me that we need to get to the ER. I pack up John Michael and we wait for Ben to get home. John Michael (Thankfully) was able to spend the evening with his Nana and Ops and Ben, Matthew, and I headed to the ER.  They were very nice and segregated us from the rest of the crowd. He was still running fever and did get assigned a room fairly quickly for the ER. A chest X-Ray and CBC Blood work (made Matthew and me cry) were ran, Tylenol given and then we were sent home around 10 PM saying it was probably a virus, but go see the pediatrician in the morning.

For having 102.2 Fever, he sure looked good!

Mommy and Matthew at the ER.
The next day, Matthew and I head to see our favorite Ped (Dr. Chris) and confirm that he still thinks it is a virus. On Friday, Matthew woke up fever free. ANSWER TO PRAYERS! He has been a healthy, happy boy since.

Then comes last Friday, I wake up with 103.4 fever and John Michael is snotting around. My awesome husband, came home from work and JM and I headed to the doctor. JM gets the diagnosis of "allergies", I get the wonderful "It is just a virus". However, during my exam, the doctor is very troubled by my thyroid, so blood work for me.

Sunday comes, I'm still running 102 - 104* F. Go back to doctor. They do a strep culture and put me a strep meds "just to be safe". Oh, and by the way, "your thyroid is really messed up".

Tuesday is Matthew's 2 Month Well Check Up.....perfectly healthy! (Later post to come on our big 2 Month Old)  Tuesday afternoon - Thyroid Ultrasound for me.

Today, another trip to the lab with an amazing husband (who knows I pass out giving blood) for CBC, Mono Test, and more thyroid testing.
My healthy Kiddo!
I'm on 6 days folks of running fever, killing myself to eat or talk, and just down right miserable. My family and I are more than ready for me to be well. SO.....if anyone actually reads this, please pray for us. Healing of this sickness for me and continued protection of my boys from this AWFUL whatever-it-is.
This is how we have been surviving.
An amazing husband taking care of me and Matthew Strapped to me!

Weigh-in Wednesdays, Week 3

Drum Roll Please.......Week 3......

Loss 3 Pounds

The good news, I lost weight. The bad news, I didn't follow the Weight Watchers Diet. I followed the SICK diet. The fever, aches, chills, hurts to eat and talk diet. Consisting mainly of water and soup (and one Frosty for dinner).

My goal of the week was to stay away from "The Real Thing" (Coke) and my sickness has helped me. I have had a total of 2 cokes this entire week (I big accomplishment). It hurts too much to drink sodas, so that always helps the matter.

I'm hoping I kick this thing soon and the weight loss will be from dieting and not from the SICK diet.

Goal of the Week: Feel better! That way I can start exercising again.

Weigh In Wednesdays- Week 2

Drum Roll Please.......Week 2......

Loss 0 Pounds

This is correct, no loss and no gain, which after the weekend I had, I see this as a win actually.
I stuck to the diet as much as possible; however, when you go to your home town, you must indulge a little, right? You just pull up your boot straps and vow to do better the next week.

My motto has been "Rome wasn't built in a day", so I shouldn't expect to lose 20 pounds in a day either.

Goal of the week: Stay away from Coca-Cola. This is my BIGGEST down fall. I LOVE coke.

Matthew Meets Hot Springs

My Hometown, if you didn't know, is Hot Springs, Arkansas.
When I was in High School, I thought it was the most boring, awful place one could live in.
It seems the older I get, the more and more special and exciting it becomes.
Hot Springs has the Lake, the Horse Races, Magic Springs, great histrocial sites, etc, etc, but most importanly it has my family. Not only my mom and dad but the entire Burroughs (and Hall) clan.....grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.
Matthew was finally travel ready and we packed up and went to visit the Hot Springs Family. We had a great time and were able to see *almost* everyone.

Some of the Highlights:

* Friday afternoon being able to chat and spend time with my grandmother, Mama Pat.

Mama Pat is thinking "My Grandchildren never acted like this!"
* Friday afternoon Matthew met a set of his Great-Grandparents (Mama Anna and Papa Calvin)
Mama Anna and Matthew

Papa Calvin and Matthew
* John Michael took several rides on Papa Calvin's Neat "Toy" (The Golf Cart)

* Saturday, Ben and I took John Michael and our Nephew (Riley) out for a spin on the lake.

* "Dado" pulled Ben and John Michael and then Riley and I tubing! The boys really enjoyed it. (As a side note....becoming a grandfather has realy changed my dad. NEVER would you get me on a tube that my dad was pulling because he would KILL you.....you throw a grand kid on a tube and you can go as slow as possible!)
Pros!

* Ben, My Mother, and I all were able to successfuly ski!

* Bringing Matthew to the Church I grew up in and introducing him to the sweet church members.

* Sunday afternoon Birthday Party for Papa Calvin

* Jennifer, Abby (my Neice), Matthew, and I took an excursion to Little Rock on Monday which included a stop for lunch at PF Chang's!
Our "Twins"
* Blessings and answers to prayers when my grandather (Papa Calvin) fell down an entire flight of stairs on Tuesday Morning and after getting him checked out at the hosptial no broken bones nor head trauma! PRAISE THE LORD!

* Just Hanging Out
How "Dado" is about 90% of the time.....being beat up!

As always, I never felt like I had enough time visiting with everyone....can't wait for our next trip back!

Weigh In Wednesdays

Since I'm not attending Weight Watchers Meetings and doing the program all on-line, as an extra effort to keep myself accountable I'm going to post my Weigh Ins on the Blog! (I know you are excited about reading it, right?)

Drum Roll Please.......Week 1......

Loss 4.2 Pounds

This was what I needed after a week of watching every little thing I had eaten. Isn't it crazy that when you start a "diet" you are obsessed with food. What you are eating as well as what is not good for you? It consumes you until you get your groove.

Before anyone accuses me of not eating,  you are so wrong. Although I want to lose weight, I know that a little one is depending on me for food as well so I MUST eat in order to maintain my milk supply.  That is why I love the WW program, it is not a "diet" it is truly a change in "lifestyle". You CAN eat and are encouraged to do so.....I am just eating the right stuff now.

This is an example of what I typically have every morning:

Cheese Eggs, 2 Pieces of Turkey Sausage,
English Muffin with Cinnamon, and Watermelon.

My Walking Partner this Morning
My Tip of the Week: If you love chips, you have GOT to get these. (I get them a Sam's Club)  They are Veggie Chips with Ranch and they taste JUST LIKE any fatty chip. You get 38 Chips for only 3 Points!

Olympics

We have really enjoyed watching the Olympics this year. It is fun to cheer on the USA as well as hear all the amazing stories of the athletes (from the US and other countries).
As part of the Olympics, I ALSO love the "Parent" commercials they have been showing.  You know, the
P & G ones.
As a parent myself and watching/hearing the stories, I would love to talk to one of the Olympiad's parents. I mean, when did they realize they had an Olympic athlete? Especially the young athletes (the ones in their teens), when did they (as parents) decide it was ok to allow their child to forgo studies and focus on their sport? I would think that that would be a giant leap of faith and probably one time or another were criticized for allowing their child to spend that many hours focusing on a sport.

With all that being said, here is our little Olympic Stars........

Matthew is working on his GOLD medal in Football. I'm sure that will be an Olympic Sport by the time he is old enough.....

John Michael is going for GOLD in Swimming. In all seriousness, JM has exploded in swimming this summer. HE. LOVES. IT. He has absolutely no fear of the water. This is an incredible improvement from last year. We have a neighborhood pool only 2 doors down and we have been taking full advantage. Before Matthew was born, swimming was my relief, and we were out there almost daily!

The Diet

I gave myself 6 weeks Postpartum to continue eating whatever/whenever I wanted too.  This way I could focus on nursing and resting.

Well....Matthew turned six weeks on Monday so TODAY is the DAY.

Matthew at 6 Weeks
Ben and I lost a TON of weight on Weight Watchers after John Michael was born, so we are trying it again!
The first time around I went to the meetings and then shared what I learned with Ben. This time, I'm going to do it on-line. I just was afraid I wouldn't be able to make the meetings with our busy (newborn) lifestyle.

JM  and I when I had lost 25 Pounds the first go ahead.
It is a very long and daunting road ahead (especially because I'll have to hold myself accountable because I won't be going to meetings); however, when I look back on pictures, I KNOW that I can lose the weight. And losing the weight is what is best not only for me, but for being able to be healthy and active for my boys.

With all of that being said.....any encouragement is appreciated. As well as any tasty recipes. It doesn't have to be a "Weight Watcher" recipe per se, but anything with lots of fruits and veggies (those are "free" on this diet).

This was today's lunch.....all of this was TWO points!
